Server status We have stabilized the site by adding more servers to handle the additional load that has been stressing the servers recently and will continue to monitor the day-to-day status of things. Additionally, over the summer we will be investing in another round of technology upgrades to bring PAFOA's infrastructure up to date with new capabilities that will allow us to continue to grow and further minimize the chances of full downtime outages. As always, endless thanks to our members and guests for their patience and for making PAFOA awesome. While waiting for my back-ordered Colt 6920 I have some time to speculate and research on what upgrades I want. At some point I know I'm going to want to mount some accessories, after a quality optic and BUIS that can be mounted on the top rail, a light and a VFG come to mind. This means some type of hand guard rail. As I wanted to keep the rifle as modular as possible I was not considering a traditional free-float style of hand guard rail as it requires either special tools or an armorer to install.
But with standard two piece rails I loose the precision to mount optics on them. However when I came across the DD Omega rail. It seems I can get the best of both worlds. A free float rail that is solid enough to mount optics but is easy and semi-quick to install with common hand tools. My questions is does the DD Omega live up to it's clam of being sturdy enough to mount optics if I decide I want my optic farther down or want to add a magnifier? If so I'm willing to spend the extra $70-100 for the DD vs a YHM or Midwest Industries two piece setup.
I know I'm the only one who cares. But this is Post 742 for me on this forum.

My Boy Scout Troop 742 met at American Legion Post 742 in Fairview, PA. Also 7:42 AM was the morning bell for homeroom in my High School. Maybe I should play the lottery today with that number. (By true I mean that the tube is installed more permanently than the 'bolt on' types - not to diminish the use of bolt-ons at all) The effectiveness of the DD or similar handguards is not so much whether the sights are affected as it is whether sling pressure is effectively removed from the barrel and, if it is, how durable that separation is. From what I have seen, the screw connections are fairly robust. For most of what it seems AR owners do with their rifles, the DD has a good rep. I'd not choose it for serious target shooting (not a legal handguard for HP matches) but that is not it's intended purpose in any case. Pete BTw: Should you want a true barrel float - but none of the places to mount 'stuff' that the Omega rail offers, doing it yourself is fairly easy and the total cost is less than the DD rail, even including the tools needed, about $200.
Basically, you need a free float tube, an Armorer's wrench, an action block and a punch and a mallet. Last edited by Pete D.; March 27th, 2012 at 06:47 AM.
