If I already own a synology NAS or buy a cheap second hand one could I use its SN and MAC on my xpenology build to install a legitimately purchased license? Sure, you can, but first read license agrements. IMO, since license is given to a particual hardware, which is identified by pair of serial with mac, by using serial and mac on xpenology and using survillance licence you will violate license agrements. But it is just my opinion and you can ask synology support about that. Let say synology will find a way to identify that you have installed extra license on xpenology, and will revoke all extra licenses with no refund? What will you do? You're already violating ToS by using XPEnology, so. Thanks, I was under the impression that xpenology was leveraging open source software (or at least not completely proprietary) and not an infringement of Synology license.
Is that not so? That's why I was curious about the surveillance package as it is quite clearly an 'add-on' synology sell and should be compensated for. Yes, the Xpenology is really only the Linux kernel with some mechanisms in-place to combat the checks done by the Synology OS, extra drivers and it emulates the device that has serial number. But the real problem starts when you download the PAT file and use the proprietary parts of the Synology OS on the box that wasn't licensed for it. Technically, in some countries its illegal to bypath the mechanisms that prevent you from running on a non-licensed hardware, so the bootloader would also be illegal. That's why I was curious about the surveillance package as it is quite clearly an 'add-on' synology sell and should be compensated for. Synology's DSM is Linux, with their own proprietary additions (funny thing, they do break GPL with their synobios kernel module!), including the app system, volume system, and the web UI. What we do is take this specifically licensed product (because this together is a product), break that license and ToS, and install it on our hardware. Then we circumvent the protection employed by Synology to make it work (and also we add some extra stuff (kernel drivers for support, mostly). So yes, we are infringing the license of DSM, because it says it can only be used on Synology hardware (hardware it is sold on).
Coming back to the initial question with some answers and no solution I have bought a licence for the 3-rd cam which worked well on DS112 box. The same licence worked also on baremetal Xpenology 6.02.
Now I have gone over to ESXi based environment and the licence does not activate anymore, giving the 'connection failed' error I have tried SN and MAC pair generated by the excel file available in the net. I have also tried the original MAC and SN from the DS112, with still the connection failed message at activation the licence. Might be that there are some detection mechanisms for non genuine HW. I also tried to fall back to the oldest possible surveillance station with no success. My workaround: I am running separate Xpenology instance on ESXi for every pair of cameras. Not very convenient as they have separate timelines. Still looking for a more permanent solution, and I'm ready to buy more licences if I get it working.

Still looking for a more permanent solution, and I'm ready to buy more licences if I get it working. The reason it no longer works is because Synology have changed their T&C's around moving licences, even on genuine hardware.
I have switched from Surveillance Station to a different solution and as a result I will no longer be using my 4-cam license pack for the Surveillance Station app. I purchased this license about a year ago and am the only one using it. Asking $150 USD via Paypal, but if no one takes me up on it I might resort to a lower price. I will update this thread when it is sold so that the buyer knows I am not selling to anyone else. I will send you the license key via PM.
For those wishing to check on my 'trustworthiness' my eBay handle is 'coloradycanyons' and I have 100% feedback with hundreds of transactions. Voip-ninja wrote:License key has been sold! Why is this not legal? If the original user uninstalls the keys and does not use them again, why would this be illegal?

Would the same be true (illegal) for me to uninstall my keys from one Diskstation and install onto another? I was about to buy four more camera and keys but now I am HIGHLY reconsidering, if I can't legally sell it if and when I no longer need it. From an EU ruling in July 2012:- IDG News Service - Europe's highest court ruled on Tuesday that the trading of 'used' software licenses is legal and that the author of such software cannot oppose any resale.
The exclusive right of distribution of a copy of a computer program covered by such a licence is exhausted on its first sale, said the European Court of Justice (ECJ). This applies to downloaded software as well as that bought on CD or DVD. This ruling sets a precedent for trading of used software licenses throughout the European Union and could potentially impact ebooks and computer games as well. The court also ruled that any patches or upgrades made to the software through a service agreement also form part of the used software that can be sold on. However it said that the reseller must make the copy downloaded onto his own computer 'unusable' at the time of resale. Hi duffykins, Thanks for bringing this to our attention, to clarify the point about reselling: as we've had cases where users resold but didn't uninstall, we've clearly not been encouraging reselling, and adopted a blacklist. However you're right and after confirming with our Surveillance team, reselling isn't in itself an issue.
So to recap: -reselling licences is legal and won't result in any blacklisting -to make this fair to all DiskStation users, it applies anywhere (not only in European countries) -a licence mustn't be installed on more than one DiskStation: if a licence is found to be installed on more than one DiskStation, then it risks being blacklisted: check this if you resell/purchase a licence.obviously, the blacklist also applies if licences are openly shared by their owner (notably on this forum) Sorry for the previous misunderstanding, and I hope this clarifies things for our Surveillance Station users. Jeremie wrote:Just as a reminder to the buyer(s): reselling Surveillance Station cam licences isn't legal, if ever we were to notice your licence has been transferred, its key will be added to our blacklist which will block it in the following Surveillance Station upgrade.
It's really good to know when a manufacturer has decided to disregard the. That substantially changes the quality of the product one is purchasing and reduces its value accordingly. As many people have pointed out, purchasing the remaining 19 licenses at $50 a pop exceeds the cost of the Synology system and many after market security solutions which also include cameras and software.
Your pricing is already ridiculous without imposing additional restrictions on use. I just got a Synology DS411+II and after getting it I found out that I will have to pay for more Licenses for my camera's. At first i was very mad about this and though your being greedy well ok still think some greed is there but after i got over that and said ok ill buy 2 more license so i can have three cameras in my business out side of the US i attempted to buy the code. Now i have to wait for the code to get to the US resident and wait for some one to email me the code. To me this is unexceptionable i want to codes and have money to spend but i cant just buy it from your site and email it to me. Synology get with the times I want electronic delivery, I pay employees and I talk with other business owners.
License Key
Do you think i will be recommending your product with making it so hard for me to buy more licenses? How hard is it for you to put a buy more button in side of the NAS that directs me to your site?
I am not asking to give me codes I am asking you to make it easier for people to get your licenses. At this point I will be buying 2 codes to finish out this part of the project but when it comes time to upgrade this unit I might just have to pass and look for a unit that will have the business customer in mind. Just my two cents for others out there buying this unit. I purchased mine from ebay. Amazon was selling 1 license for $64, Synology America $54 and Ebay for $50. But if you got a 8 license code it was $42 per license.
And I got the code in my email in about 5 minutes from when I purchased it. Once I purchased it, I had to send a message to the seller and ask them to send it email. I got an email back right away asking me to verify I am using SS version 6 and up and that my unit supports enough licenses. I responded that it did and next thing I know I got my code.
The seller is ioomobile. Great service!!!!
